ON SUFFERING While searching for the meaning of suffering, I compiled the following thoughts of philosophers through the ages. Take what you can use. ![]() I wish I did. Sometimes I feel all the world’s pain. I only say that once in my own need I felt a light and warm and loving touch that eased my soul and banished doubt and let me go on to the end. It is not proof – there can be none. Faith’s what you find when you’re alone and find you’re not. -- Terry Anderson When it gets dark enough, you can see the stars. -- Charles A. Beard The mass of men [and women] lead lives of quiet desperation. -- Henry David Thoreau Life is full of miserableness, loneliness, unhappiness and suffering, and it's all over much too quickly. -- Woody Allen If we are unwilling to accept the suffering involved in learning from our children, they and the world will soon leave us far behind. -- M. Scott Peck Being Irish he had an abiding sense of tragedy which sustained him through temporary periods of joy. -- W. B. Yeats Suffering is the exhibition of the presence in our existence of that which is not under our control. -- H. R. Neibuhr I'll bear the sorrow that comes tomorrow, but I'll borrow none today. -- from C.E. Cowman, author unknown (perhaps Miss Annie Johnson Flint) Man is never helped in his suffering by what he thinks for himself, but only by revelation of a wisdom greater than his own. It is this which lifts him out of his distress. -- C. J. Jung The world is full of suffering. It is also full of the overcoming of it. -- Helen Keller Be like a promontory against which the waves continually break, but it stands firm and tames the fury of the water around it. -- Marcus Aurelius The tragedy of life is not so much what men suffer, but what they miss -- Thomas Carlyle ... [T]o live selfishly is to bear life as an intolerable burden. To live selflessly is to live in joy, realizing by experience that life itself is love and gift. -- Thomas Merton Even our sufferings are a gift from God. They are a hand-hewn cross that is especially ours. How we accept that personal cross is about the only decision we can make ... If we respond to His love, even what might look like great suffering, to a non-believer, is a joy. --Vicka Ivankovic, Visionary at Medjugorje There is only one thing that I dread: not to be worthy of my sufferings. -- Dostoevski You can check your attitude at the door. Just leave it there with your umbrella -- and experience pain without suffering. -- Dr Speedbump If there is a meaning in life at all, then there must be a meaning in suffering. -- Victor Frankl (Auschwitz survivor and Psychologist) |
